Information Gathering

This starting phase includes gathering information about the client’s network, size of the network, also the type of Network architecture they follow (IDS, IPS, Firewalls, switches, etc…).

Planning

In this phase based on the information gathered we plan to analyze the network, methods to follow and the usage of appropriate tools. It also includes the time frame to analyze depends on the size of network.

Capturing

This phase is acquiring Packets from the possible sources of relevant network, following procedures that preserve the integrity of the data. For example, acquisition is usually performed in a timely manner because of the likelihood of losing data such as current network connections.

Analysis

This involve careful examination of the content  in the packets using different  methods to sift through large amounts of acquired information and extract and identify data of particular interest.

Reporting

The next phase is reporting the results of the examination, which may include the findings, actions used in the examination and recommendations for improvement. The formality of the utilization step varies greatly depending on the situation.
